Opinion: Three ways to make filthy big changes over the rest of this year

Many of us set big goals at the beginning of the year but life gets in the way and these goals start to slip away faster than a greased piglet on a Ducati. Bearing in mind we are 25% through 2023 then this three step process to bring clarity to achieving your goals this year could just be the piece of the puzzle you need to get back on track.

It’s based on the simple idea that small actions join together to make big changes to our Brand, but you need to set goals that are clear and defined, not just existential mind-fluff of what you want to achieve.

For example
 - I want to double my brand’s turnover in 2023 - okay….
 - I want to make step changes increasing my brand’s turnover incrementally towards doubling in 2023 is more nuanced and focussed.

Make sense?
Sort of.
Right.
Here goes…

Step 1.

Bearing in mind there are nine months left of this year, first write down your one Filthy Big Change™ for 2023. These big change goals could be anything - opening a new branch, becoming an expert in your industry, offering a new course to clients, whatever, but we’d suggest having between one and three goals.
Then…
• Write down your Yearly goals and give some thought to how you will actually achieve it by December 2023

Step 2

Break down that annual goal into three largish chunks (one for the end of each remaining quarter), then set appropriate goals for the end of each quarter which will help you get approximately a third of the way towards your annual goal.

Step 3

Now break down each quarterly goal into three bitesize chunks (one for each month within that quarter). In effect you should now have 9 steps for each of your goals.

OK, so this time with examples…

Let’s take the Filthy Big example of…
Having an online course available to download by December 2023

Quarterly Goals
Q1: Write one third of your course

Monthly Goals

M1: Conduct research into similar courses
M2: First draft of third
M3: Re-write and edit what is written

Quarterly Goals
Q2: Write remaining two thirds of course

Monthly Goals
M1: Write remainder of your course
M2: Edit, re-write whole course
M3: Start testing phase with family & friends

Quarterly Goals
Q3: Publish Course on Website

Monthly Goals
M1: Work on graphics to illustrate course
M2: Start Social campaigns to publicise course + ‘Early Bird’ Signup
M3: Publish course

Yes, this is an over-simplified plan, and yes, it is essentially about breaking down tasks into smaller, manageable and all-importantly actionable chunks to get to the desired goal.
